In Big Sky country, there are always beautiful, outdoor opportunities to enjoy such as testing out your cowboy skills at billings ranches or the beautiful mountain roads found all over the state. Check out these scenic drives billings, MT and the surrounding Montana areas have to offer.

Southeast Montana: Billings to Glendive

Journey through the badlands and plains of Montana and journey through the state’s Native American heritage and dinosaur history on this scenic drive. At Billings, start at the Western Heritage Center and then then head to Little bighorn Battlefield National Monument. At Glendive, your destination will lead you to the home of two of Montana’s dinosaur museums including Makoshika State park and the Frontier Gateway museum.

Beartooth Highway

Described by some as the most beautiful drive in America, this 68 mile drive will take you to heights of nearly 11,000 feet, with views of snow capped peaks, alpine lakes, glaciers and plateaus. It’ll take you from lush forest to alpine tundra in just a few miles. It’s truly a drive you won’t forget.

C.M. Russell Auto Tour

Charles Marion Russell was an artist of the Old American West. With over 2,000 paintings of cowboys, Indians and Western America landscapes, many of his paintings featured the Judith Basin, the same place he arrived back in 1880 from Missouri. For the next ten years he would live in the Judith Basin and capture what life was like back then through his artwork.

Kings Hill Scenic Byway

Stretching 71 miles along Highway 89, this scenic highway allows travelers to leisurely enjoy the rugged beauty of Montana. Located in the Lewis and Clark National Forest, you can choose to continue driving along the pass where you’ll be met with hundreds of miles of mountain scenery, lakes, campgrounds, trailheads and even old mines.

Skalkaho Pass

Looking for some of Montana’s least traveled mountain roads? Take this narrow, winding drive that will offer beautiful views and take you right past Skalkaho Falls. The road was once a trail used by Native Americans and was used to link two mining towns in the early 20s. Before venturing this seasonal drive, call 511 for road conditions and closures.
