Four Dances rocks

The Yellowstone Valley has impressive geological features. This area was on the shore of the Western Interior Seaway around 80 million years ago. As the sea retreated, it left behind sand deposits, which compressed into Eagle Sandstone.

During the last million years, the Yellowstone River was carved through this sandstone to create canyon walls known as Billings Rimrocks or The Rims. Today's visitors can contemplate the massive forces that have made this unique area.

FOUR DANCES HISTORY AND NAME‍

Humans have used the Four Dances area for millennia. In the Pictograph Caves, five miles to the south, an 8,000-year-old stone tool was recovered.

The area was named after an important Chief of the Crow Nation. Chief Four Dances used this area to fast in the 1830s and received his name in a vision at this particular location.
