The History and Importance of Veterans Day
Most of us are familiar with Veterans Day. But do you know why it's celebrated on November 11 every year rather than some other day?
The tradition dates back to the days of World War I, which was billed at the time as "The Great War." Though the Treaty of Versailles officially ended the conflict, it wouldn't be signed until June of 1919, an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations went into effect on November 11, 1918.
President Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919, as the first celebration of Armistice Day, to be observed with a series of parades and public meetings. Businesses would also suspend their services for a brief time beginning at 11:00 am when the armistice went into effect.
Originally, the day was meant to honor veterans of the Great War specifically. But by 1954, the holiday's name had been switched to "Veterans Day," and President Eisenhower issued the Veterans Day Proclamation, stating that the holiday should honor all veterans across every branch of the armed forces.
Veterans Day Celebration w/ Jonah Prill and Zechariah Peabody at Craft Local
Craft Local, one of the top breweries in Billings, MT, is offering a musical celebration to honor the occasion.
This venue is committed to providing budding musicians with a space to showcase their works. A non-profit that seeks to educate and develop new talent, Craft Local offers heart and soul in addition to food and drink.
On the subject of the latter, you can nosh on free popcorn while you make your selection from the bar menu. Will it be an order of jalapeno cheddar sausage, a soft pretzel with cheese, or a pepperoni pizza? Maybe you'd better order all three, to be safe. You can wash it down with a local brew like Crazy Peak's Peanut Butter Stout or Meadowlark's refreshing Whilsner Pilsner.
Montana native Jonah Prill will be on board to get the party started with his unique style of country western music. Just months after the 24-year-old Prill hit the music scene, he had over a million fans worldwide. That might be partly because, as the grandson of country great Dean Evans, the guy is royalty within the genre. But his sound and his unforgettable lyrics are unquestionably his own.
Zechariah Peabody will also be on hand to keep the youthful—and local—vibe rocking. When you hear his tunes, with lyrics that cover everything from love to addiction to heartbreaking loss, you'll want to dust off your boots and hit the dance floor. This isn't the first time he's loaned his talents to Craft Local, and from the reception he gets, it likely won't be the last.
